Last week's tribute to Syd Barrett at the Barbican could not have made the Madcap, or the so called Crazy Diamond, laugh. What if Chrissie Hynde, Damon Albarn, The Bees, Captain Sensible et al showed up to perform. What if Waters came on stage to play one of his songs and Gilmour, Wright and Mason appeared later amidst a crowd of effervescing aficionados who were ecstatic about their chance to see Pink Floyd live? It was apparent that everything was polished and unfeeling, not resembling to a tribute to a recently dead artist but to some distant figure that was long gone (partly true of course). Two summers ago, I was somewhere near Hyde Park crying while watching Pink Floyd live from TV performing at Live 8. Last week I was watching them live - separately since Waters and Gilmour never appeared onstage at the same time - but I had no tears to shed this time.

Syd Barrett! What a complex and influencial musician! He suffered from a severe mental illness.I like Pink Floyd but I am more into Joy Division.
