The other day, we were drinking a couple of pints with a Russian girl from the States. At least this is how she was previously 'advertised.' We then realised that the identity 'Russian' was nothing but a euphimism. The girl was absolutely a product of American society, having nothing to do with Europe, not to mention Russia, who indulged herself in reproducing the mass media/conservative discourse: "In America you feel safe". The fact that people are monitored everywhere is not a bad thing really. Oh no! On the contrary it makes you feel you are not in danger (for a moment I wanted to mention Discipline and Punish or 1984 but then I said to myself: WHAT IS THE POINT?)
Censorship of nudity was the other issue that prevailed (oopsidaisy!) The fact that american television censored scenes from the 2004 Olympic Games opening ceremony just because they displayed the breasts of ancient greek statues or the body of a pregnant woman, is a token of democracy and the state's grand generosity of providing the opportunity to choose how to raise their children (because the child does not have to know how the body of a naked woman looks like anyway. If s/he does, s/he will begin a career in brothels!)
I do not mind people expressing their opinions and sparkle discussion. What I mind is narrow-mindedness. What I mind is that some people fail to understand the illusory freedom and security we are provided with. But again, who am I to judge people?

Που έχεις χαθει κοριτσάκι;
lol, where to begin? apart from wishing i was w/you when you were w/that student.
re: in America you feel safe
i'm betting i'm rather older than this person and all i can say is in 'bowling for columbine,' Michael Moore succinctly summed up, better than i ever could, how in my personal US experience over most of a lifetime, i couldn't help but notice that my country--America-- wants its population to do nothing more than be fixated on FEAR--fear 'the other,' fear sex and on and on and on.
the sex/nudity thing is another joke--i think i've said on your site before how i'm still getting goofed on by my British friends here about the repercussions of Janet Jackson's escaping tit and John Ashcroft's hanging 8,000$ curtains on that nude statue.
in short, sex is bad, guns are good, mmmkay?
i'd like to punch that chick out--believe it or not, there are many other Americans like me who think my country's gone totally insane, especially since 2000.
the nuts would prolly have heart attacks if they watched TV here. i've seen films w/all scenes intact, films i'd already seen in the states...i'm all 'hey, i didn't know that happened in this film...'
as you know, i could go on and on but you get the idea.
BTW, i can't tell you how many news items i've read over the past 20 years, w/headlines similar to 'those wacky Brits.' a lot of them have only to do w/accomplished British men who have won awards and such but who have long hair--y'know, something must be wrong w/them, lol.
morons. BTW, when last i was in NYC seeing my mom, three different strangers came up to me asking what band i was in. i'm all 'not in a band...' and they're all 'but you have red stripes in your hair!!!!'
morons--oopsy, i said that already. :-)
Άσε τρέχω από δω κι από κει αλλά περνάω πολύ καλά! Σας έρχομαι σύντομα! :)
I totally agree on the allusion to 'bowling for columbine'! The funny thing is that she has spent two years working in Poland and she travels around Europe! And still she has the impression that Europe is a kind of a fetish that you like but you enjoy it from a distance BUT there is no place like home! It makes sense; as far as I know her brother is a replica of the neo-conservative christians who loathe sex before marriage, homosexuals etc...(you know what I am talking about ;))I wouldnt expect much from her, even though she has spent her childhood in Moscow...
Believe me, I wanted to punch her as well or at least contradict her but she wouldnt let anybody speak with her self-indulgent, defensive, biased and loud monologue (I really got tired by her voice and enunciation!)
Next time you should say you re in a band, hihi (and put some blue stripes as well!) :)
the Russian chick sounds like one of those who came over to the states when we still had a good rep; post WWII immigrants were kissing the ground when they got there (metaphorically or not).
Europe is a kind of a fetish that you like but you enjoy it from a distance BUT there is no place like home!
over the past two years that i've lived here, i've met other Americans who feel the same way. they're all 'but don't you miss (whatever) and/or feel safer back there?' and i'm all No--i prefer to live in a country that didn't go insane after 7/7 like we went after 9/11.
this immediately branded me as a traitor, someone who didn't 'get' the fact that 9/11 changed everything. i got a lot of 'you voted for kerry, right?' lol
from kindergarten on, they really teach you how we're the best country in the world and socialised anything is tantamount to communism--it's all bad to them.
she wouldnt let anybody speak with her self-indulgent, defensive, biased and loud monologue (I really got tired by her voice and enunciation!)
*groans* yep...we're number 1! USA! USA! and if people don't believe you, just shout louder! lol
Hahahaha mmmmkaaayy!
Well about the nationalism promoted since kindergarden I believe that it happens almost everywhere (in Greece it definitely happens and especially against the Turks. But that is another story...On the other hand, one could argue we have reasons to be nationalists due to our history whereas the USA do not have a long history nor were colonized.)
I knew that some people were loud, but not even respecting pauses???Pauses/breaths were substituted with "like" and "whatever" OBVIOUSLY!! :)
"Σας έρχομαι σύντομα! :)"
Πόσο σύντομα;;
Ψάχνω παρέα για Antony...
Στις 27! Απαπαπα δεν μου αρέσουν οι Antony!!!:P
like, the proof that fixed my own personal pudding (or whatever) was that on 7/7 blair flew down to London immediately from Gleneagles while on 9/11 our preznit flew away and hid and finally, like, showed up in NYC days after the Towers fell. or whatever.
(please note i'm not a blair fan at all.) :-)
Oh yes, I remember that instance from Moore's Farenheit 9/11...
Well, you are not really judging. You are criticising, which is your right in any free-speech environment!
K.
Thank you Kosta. What you say is true but sometimes I am afraid I am overdoing it...:)
