The illusion of The End?

On Monday we went to a talk given by Judith Butler at Goldsmith's and we mentioned how much we would like to hear Baudrillard talking. On Tuesday we came across his book The Transparency of Evil and Dr Gonzo rushed to the library to borrow it. On Wednesday we read about his death. Coincidences sometimes are delusional, or not?

"Since the world is on a delusional course, we must adopt a delusional standpoint towards the world. Better to die from extremes than starting from the extremities."

Baudrillard, Jean. The Transparency of Evil, Verso, 1993: 1

I was just reading in the Guardian that when Derrida died 3 yrs ago, apparently Baudrillard said "I admire Derrida, but it's not my thing". I agree with the statement and I would use it by changing Derrida's name with Baudrillard's, too. But when these people die, it's a loss. I'm not sure they're making any more of them. [insert obvious comment about simulacra]

At least B managed to write 50 books and become a very influential philosopher of the late 20th century. He accompanied me in the summer while I was writing my upgrade chapter and I must admit he is really inspiring!

check out John Dos Paulos' book 'Innumeracy' to see what he says about coincidences (i think it's chapter two).

Its truly a great loss.I loved the quote that you shared. It raises a lot of issues on the delusional course that the world is on.

@pixie: Thank you Pixie! Yes, it is a great loss but as I said earlier, he has left a mount of work behind him... If you want to read another interesting view on Baudrillard's death visit http://alanspsychedelicbreakfast.blogspot.com/2007/03/simulacrum-of-delayed-farewell.html
