Marie Antoinette

Sophia Coppola's latest film aims at dismantling the myth surrounding Marie Antoinette who has been accused of lascivious behaviour and exaggerated extranagance and present some aspects of a more humane and down-to-earth queen (which does not mean that she attempts to mystify her). Loosely based on the historical biography Marie Antoinette: A Journey by Antonia Fraser. Excellent shots, nostalgic atmosphere, punk rock attitude and music by New Order, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Gang of Four, The Strokes et al. A must see! (did anyone notice the purple Converse in one shot or is it just me??)

Ok, so:

1) A woman living with such an extraordinary writer would have to be insightful in her own right...I'm therefore not surprised. Antonia Fraser must be praised for the text.

2) Beautiful, beautiful shots! They keep saying that Coppola has not reached her peak yet, but, hey, with Lost in Translation (a masterpiece in my view) and now this in her resume, she places the bar very high for herself...Looking forward to future work.

3)Of course Marie Antoinette wasn't all that naughty. One thing I know is true for my homeland, is that you get good manners. That's true of all Austrian girls.

4) I didn't notice the converse shoes, but, alas, I noticed the cakes and cupcakes. They've been hard to shake off and it's been 2 days.

Pardon the research paper-long post.

Oh, and, that was the last post by the so-called ladydontmind who would like to thank Talking Heads for inspiring the name. She is now called TraumGeist and can be found under her own blog (I used to think that the day would never come pou lene kai oi New Order;))

I love Coppola and I am looking forward to see it!Its a relief to read a good review. Why do you think that it got so bad reviews everywhere?

This film is not out yet in Greece. I 'm looking forward to seeing it, although it got quite bad reviews. Until now Sofia Coppola has directed two amazing films and I expect this one to be just as good. The soundtrack seems very interesting.

PS: Long live Tarantino

@pixie: I have no idea pixie!I don't really follow the reviews...What are they saying?

@Vic Vega: Welcome Vic! You remind me of a guy I went out once and then he got shot in the stomach! (was it in 1994???) ;)
The soundtrack of Marie Antoinette rocks!! I would suggest you see it and then give me your opinion. When is it released there?

P.S Long live!

I dont want to make judgements, as I havent seen the film.Coppola's work after all is quite interesting, even though I prefer the naivety and beauty of The Virgin Suicides a lot more than (the over-estimated, in my opinion) Lost in Translation.
But, I am always sceptical about biographical films, since they are neither fiction nor documentary-why do they make these films at the first place??
But then again, perhaps Coppola uses M.A. as a pretext for doing something else in terms of aesthetics etc etc.Anyway, I will see the film and make comments in my blog.(And of course: Who cares about reviews and critics these days??)

PS. This is quite a lengthy comment, but either as Pixina Witchetygrub or under my new blogger nickname, you know me, Mia-I just like talking!:P

Thank you Mia. Well it wasn't me. I 've never been shot, yet.
I 'm not sure about the release, soon I hope...
So many promising movies coming up and you get to see them all first.

@ Andromeda: You are absolutely right! Biopic films (and not documentaries)are propagating the ideas of few people on a real person or situation and can be really misleading despite the research that has been done. I always pay attention to small details wondering all that when I am watching such films... However, this film was more or less objective and stressed the aesthetic (which I love) so I really enjoyed it!

@ Vic: It is good to know...;) Stay tuned, it doesnt matter we see them first, you are luckier that you can see more, cinema is really expensive around here...(as EVERYTHING ELSE!)
